jennifer hudson will always love you, whitney

3rd February 2010

the 2010 bet honors aired on monday night, honoring the achievements of sean combs, queen latifah, and one ms. whitney houston, among others. performances were pretty amazing through and through (you can’t really go wrong with stevie wonder, patti labelle, mary j. blige, and india arie, among others). but it was jennifer hudson who really stole the show. her version of “i will always love you” – whitney’s signature cover of the beautiful dolly parton track – was the highlight of the night, and just might have been (dare i say it) better than whitney’s version. take a look:

isn’t it nice to see jennifer singing the classics? it brings me back to her days of idol. i half expected simon to pop out of somewhere to tell her how tough it must have been to take on a whitney classic, but what a great job she did. i mean, this would have certainly been one of his “absolutely brilliant – the best performance of the night for me, by far” moments, don’t ya think?

my favorite moment has to be around the 3:55 mark, where whitney, who’s been cheering jennifer on / taunting her from the aisles, seems to completely loose it. am i the only one who wants to see these two women go at it in a vocal steel cage death match?

get excited: lost is back tonight

2nd February 2010

20100104_lost_560x375

i can’t believe it’s finally here: the premiere of the last season of lost. to celebrate this momentous occasion, you have a few choices here folks:

1. you can watch the first four minutes of tonight’s premiere here and ruin it for everyone else in your lost pool.
2. you can watch the entire first episode of tonight’s premiere here and watch idol tonight instead.
3. you can watch a scene from the series premiere of the show (remember that?) that supposedly will help you understand something about something here.
4. you can book a flight on oceanic 815.
5. you can study the lost subway map and see if that provides any clues.
6. you can read a bundle of theories here and try and figure it out for yourself.

or

7. you can wait until tonight like the rest of us!

yeah, you’ll probably choose #7. it’s well worth the wait!

in the meantime, you should DEFINITELY watch this amazing video of the oceanic flight 815 crash in real time, a la 24. it’s pretty mind blowing.

anyone else excited for tonight? i just can’t wait ’til the show is over so i can buy the really expensive box set and start watching the series over again!

reality bites [volume 11]

1st February 2010

AMERICAN IDOL
i’ve been avoiding idol so far, and will be picking up my coverage in a few weeks (once hollywood week stars). so for now, i’ll just point this out. apparently, project runway designer daniel franco auditioned for the show. as if being on two seasons of runway weren’t enough. is there any reality show he won’t try and go for? oh, also, one of these guys might replace simon.

AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL
nicole fox, the winner of cycle 13 (aka “the short cycle”), has been rumored to book a huge international campaign. problem is – she hasn’t booked it! eek!

THE BACHELOR
looks like trista and ryan aren’t the only ones. the bachelor’s jason and molly will marry on tv. why won’t anyone divorce on tv anymore?

A BASEMENT AFFAIR
if you’ve seen the awful vh1 reality show, then you remember that weird girl annie. well guess what? it was all an act! read all about her quest to become a famewhore here!

CHEF ACADEMY
that porn star from chef academy is getting his own cooking show. i’d write his name down, but i can’t pronounce it, and for the most part, everyone only knows him as “the hot guy on that cooking show i didn’t watch.”

DANCING WITH THE STARS
good news, folks! samantha harris has quit! i repeat, samantha harris has quit!

DESIGN STAR
that gay porn star who was on design star is suing a bundle of people and will probably never win.

FAMOUS CRIME SCENE
vh1 is stealing chuck klosterman’s concept and returning to the scene of famous celebrity deaths. in famous crime scene, they’ll take a look at the death’s of tupac shakur, biggie smalls, john lennon, anna nicole smith, selena, marvin gaye, and michael jackson. the show premieres friday, february 12.

FROM G’S TO GENTS
never saw this show, but apparently one of the people on the show has assaulted a child. fucked up!

JERSEY SHORE
considering the finale boosted record ratings for mtv, it’s no surprise that the cast of the jersey shore will be back for a second season. but, there will be a bit of a twist. rather than throw everyone back in the same house, mtv’s going to throw them somewhere else. no word on where that is. but wherever it is, it’s going to know snooki will be there. and getting $10K an episode. also, jwoww is shopping around nude photos. and vinny wants to go to harvard.

LIVE FOR THE MOMENT
bad news for jeff probst. his reality show pilot live for the moment is probably dead. at least he has that other show to fall back on.

MAKE ME A SUPERMODEL
will ronnie from make me a supermodel (better known as one half of the famous couple “bronnie”) pose naked for playgirl? no word yet. but there is a great video on that link of ronnie’s coming out story.

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK CITY
kelly bensimon will be on the march cover of playboy. no, she will not be jogging in the middle of the streets of new york city. but that’s certainly one-upping bethenny frankel. in other news, did you know the countess sang? she does.

THE REAL WORLD: D.C.
that red-headed girl on the real world: d.c. apparently faked cancer a few years ago. and now she regrets it! imagine that! congratulations, girl. you are now one of the worst people in the world.

ROCK OF LOVE
wondering what heather from rock of love is up to? well, apparently she’s now starring as a video girl in a rap video by artist donnie athens.

RUPAULS DRAG RACE
the ridiculousness that is rupaul’s drag race begins tonight on logo. reruns begin on vh1 tomorrow!

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE
great news! mia michaels is coming back to so you think you can dance! okay, so it’s not for the whole season. but i’ll take what i can get!

SURVIVOR
speaking of survivor, i should note it’s been picked up for another two seasons (as has the amazing race which gives me anxiety). in other news, survivor gabon contestant and olympic gold medal winner crystal cox has admitted to using steroids. say goodbye to your gold medal!

TOOL ACADEMY 3
there’s going to be a third season of tool academy – and it’s premiering on valentines day. how romantic. check out the cast!

TRANSFORM ME
remember laverne cox, the tranny from season one of i want to work for diddy? well, she’ll join fellow trannys jamie clayton and nina poon as they travel across the country giving women makeovers in their new reality show transform me>. the show premieres on march 15. no word whether christina soriano will make an appearance. tranny fierce!

UNDATEABLE
in the tradition of tough love,
vh1 will air undateable, a show based on the book by ellen rakieten and anne coyle called undateable: 311 things guys do that guarantee they won’t be dating or having sex. the show airs for five nights beginning april 10, and will countdown the 100 things guys do that make them “undateable.” running a blog about pop culture certainly has to be on the list.

UNTITLED DAVID HASSELHOFF PROJECT
david hasselhoff may have quit his job as judge on america’s got talent, but that doesn’t mean he’s going away. we’ll see him on his own a&e reality series which apparently will follow his life as a stage dad. no word on whether drunken videos of him yapping away to his kids will be part of the show. 10 half-hour episodes will appear later this year.

WIPEOUT
not only is it the best reality show of all time, but season 3 is going to be even better. get the dish here!

XXX SPECIAL SHOUT OUT
my friend andy dehnart wrote an amazing piece about reality television stars and porn over at the daily beast. it deserves a special shout out because andy really paved the way for those of us who love to write about reality tv, and because he makes a few damn good points. also, i’ve now bookmarked reality revealed, a new porn site featuring reality stars. thanks andy!

saturday night live in five [volume 21]

1st February 2010

jon hamm hosted this week’s snl. but it was snooki who stole the show once again. and if it wasn’t for michael buble, we wouldn’t have five clips to show this week, because the show on a whole was pretty rough. alas, here’s saturday night live in five.

the other four are after the jump!

lost, as interpreted by an italian american family

22nd January 2010

i’ve got a big italian family, but the only thing i could probably ever get them to agree to do for me together would either be to eat or to argue. so it’s pretty impressive that this family banned together to recap the last five seasons of lost for us. hatch and all! take a look:

this may be the best thing i’ve seen all week since that last thing i said was the best thing.

when your google alert for john o’hurley goes off, you know it’s time to post

22nd January 2010

johnohurley_jpg_595x325_crop_upscale_q85

i’m a big fan of actor john o’hurley, known for his role as j, peterman on seinfeld or as season one winner of dancing with the stars (remember? there was a rematch and he beat kelly monaco). you see, john o’hurley graduated from my college. he too was a theater major, and a good friend of one of my professors. and one day, i met him on the street and had a lovely 30 minute conversation with him about life, theater, and providence college. and ever since then, i’ve put a google alert in to keep up with his going ons.

so you can imagine my surprise when after three years of having o’hurley’s google alert set up, it finally goes off! on gawker nonetheless! in a positive post! about the fact that he’s not hosting family feud anymore!

Sadly, John O’Hurley Set to Retire As Host of Family Feud

i mean, it was such a shock, it needed to be posted about.

does anyone else have google alerts for any celebs? and why the hell has it been so long since anyone’s written about john o’hurley?

i still hate jay leno

21st January 2010

so today, the news we were all expecting but didn’t want to believe was finally confirmed: conan o’brien is leaving the tonight show. he settled for a ton of money for him ($40 million) and his staff and hopefully for custody of all his characters. his last show will be tomorrow. reruns will then air throughout the olympics, and starting march 1, jay leno will move back to 11:35, hosting the tonight show again. or, as he puts it, “going back to the titanic.” jackass.

yes, no amount of death threats to jeff zucker could stop it from happening. conan will have to wait 8 months before he can appear on tv again (which we assume will be on fox, considering they bought the damn url).

here’s what leno had to say about the who situation a few nights ago:

when you hear him put it that way, you have to laugh. because back in 2004, he was spewing a whole bag of bullshit.

yeah – jay leno is a total asshole. and conan totally got the shaft. but basically, it’ll all work out in the end. conan will be successful. jay ill continue to destroy the legacy of the tonight show. and i’ll continue to spend my late nights on the only late night talk show worth my time: the mo’nique show!

reality bites [volume 10]

20th January 2010

before we begin, i’d like to start with some terribly sad survivor news. survivor palau cast member jenn lyon died yesterday after a long battle with breast cancer. she was 37.

jenn_home1

jenn made it to 4th place on her season. she’s the first survivor cast member to pass away. thoughts and prayers to her entire family.

SURVIVOR: HEREOS VS. VILLIANS you heard about the big survivor party, right? well cbs.
finally released a video! take a look:

my biggest takeaway? from jeff himself. he explained that at the first challenge, in the first ten minutes, they had “a broken toe, a dislocated shoulder, and topless finish.” sounds good, eh? oh, and you won’t see it in the video, but richard
hatch thinks he’ll be exonerated
from his current legal problems.
he’s also working on his own gay reality show. interesting.

TOP CHEF: MASTERS
casting rumors are already starting for the second season of bravo’s top chef spinoff success, and word
on the street
is that we’ll see los angeles chef govind armstrong (table 8, 8 oz. burger bar) among the contestants this season. this is probably important for foodies, but i’m just hoping he brings drama.

TOP CHEF
speaking of top chef, did you hear the one about how season 2 hottie sam
talbot is separating from his wife because now he’s dating the real housewives of new york city cast member kelly bensimon
?
if you remember, sam appeared on the show last season to help kelly cook with her kids. here’s hoping this is just a terrible rumor, and case of the media making assumptions. because if they’re together?
barf.

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK CITY while we’re on those bitches, did you see how jill
zarin spent the day at gawker a few days ago, interning
? i mean, it was clearly a publicity stunt. but it was damn entertaining! jill dolled
out advice
and moderated comments. you can read a recap and see a great video of the whole day here.

THE REAL WORLD: D.C.
that bisexual guy, mike? href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/queerty2/~3/yomxGRdvdiA/"> here he is without his shirt on, posing for the no h8 campaign.

ROCK OF LOVE
rock of love 2 star angelique appeared on an episode of the daily show with jon stewart in a skit about harry reid. yes, you read that right. take a look.

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c
Always Bet on Black
www.thedailyshow.com
Daily Show
Full Episodes
Political Humor Health Care Crisis

I LOVE NEW YORK 2
remember that guy from megan wants a millionaire who killed his wife and then killed himself? well guess what? he’s not the only one former vh1 reality show contestant to be accused of murder. i
love new york 2
’s jamal trulove (who was known on the show as
“miliown”) is on trial in san francisco for the death of 28-year-old seu kuka, who was show at a housing project as she was chasing trulove’s brother during a fight back on july 23, 2007.
don’t remember “miliown”? he was one of the five cast members picked by online voters (the entertainer was another one of those folks) and was eliminated in episode one. somehow, in his brief time on the show, he still got into a huge fight with new york. luckily he didn’t shoot her.

allegedly.

FOR THE LOVE OF RAY J
while we’re on the trashy reality show bandwagon, for the love of ray j season one breakout star danger
is reporting that ray j is a big old queen, and that young buck is his lover
. now that that’s said, you can get back to not giving a shit.

DANCE YOUR ASS OFF
sad news! season
one host (and tony-winning broadway superstar) marisa jaret winokur has been replaced!
that’s right, the ray of sunshine won’t be back for dance your ass off’s second season. marisa tells people magazine that it was a mutual decision based on the format of the show. she wanted more interaction with the contestants, they did. oh, and they also criticized her personal appearance a whole bunch. good job, oxygen! her replacement? former spice girl and total heifer mel b, who’s “a better fit” with oxygen’s core audience. what core audience, i’m not sure. but how great would it have been to have tori spelling hosting?

BACHELOR PAD
who would have ever thought that abc would be stealing ideas from mtv.
but
in their new show bachelor pad, abc is taking a bundle of former winners and contestants from the bachelor and the bachelorette and throwing them in a house together to make them compete in challenges for prize money.
yup, it’s the real world road rules challenge, only with a bundle of crazy bitches.
i’m sorry. that’s not fair. it’s just the real world road rules challenge, only on abc.

JERSEY SHORE
that guy from queens who punched snooki in the face? he’s
out of a job
. looks like north queens community high school didn’t want an aggressive gym teacher who punched a girl on national television, was found guilty of “simple assault,” was fined $500, and spent 6 months on a suspended jail sentence. but to be fair, it was probably a bad idea, after all that, for them to have him teach gymnastics.

in brighter news, href="http://feeds.realityblurred.com/~r/realityblurred/~3/o4yMByzUCNQ/2010_Jan_20_snooki_dating_show">rumors
are still flying that snooki might get her own reality dating show!

KEPT
producers
of the upcoming logo reality series kept are having a hard time keeping potential cast members interested
. apparently, what was billed as “the gay housewives of new york city” is really turned into “who wants to sleep with a gay millionaire meets i wanna work for a sugar daddy.” the gays clearly don’t want to be on that show!? it’s offensive to have yourself portrayed as money grubbing homos with no self-respect. it’s much easier if you go down the “look at me while i have sex with random strangers and party at clubs” route.

BE GOOD JOHNNY WEIR
controversial figure skater johnny weir has his own reality show that’s airing on the sundance channel. here’s a preview:

will he or won’t he what? who the fuck is johnny weir? i’m not sure if i’m supposed to care about this, but there it is. also, he’s on the u.s. olympic team.

THE FABULOUS BEEKMAN BOYS rounding out a trilogy of gay reality show posts, it’s <em>the
fabulous beekman boys
, which crhronicles out columnist josh kilmer-purcell and his partner brent ridge as they ditch manhattan for upstate new york. insert your “gay acres” joke here.

which casting notice has you the most excited?

20th January 2010

yesterday was a big day for casting notices. and i can’t seem to figure out which one i’m most excited about. won’t you help me, friends?

neil patrick harris is heading to glee.
that’s right! neil. patrick. harris. according to ew.com’s michael ausiello, the broadway star is just waiting for cbs to greenlight his appearance, but it’s basically a done deal. creator ryan murphy is creating the role specifically for him. he’ll be doing some singing and dancing in the episode, of course. but best of all? he’s reuniting with dr. horrible director joss whedon, who’s direct the episode, and choreographer zachary woodlee, who worked with harris on the himym 100th episode “nothing suits me like a suit” musical number. now sure, glee’s has some casting rumors in the past few weeks (including jennifer lopez and justin timberlake). but this rumor is just legen – wait for it – dary.

billy baldwin is serena van der woodsen’s daddy!
that’s right. mr. van der woodsen’s will be played by billy b. also according to ew.com’s michael ausiello, gossip girl producers have tapped the younger baldwin brother to play william van der woodsen for a good three episodes, starting in april. on dirty sexy money, baldwin’s character fell for a tranny. watch out serena – daddy’s got a secret!

kelly taylor is leaving 90210
okay, so this isn’t as much a casting notice as it is a non-casting notice. but jenni garth told access hollywood that she hasn’t been filming new episodes. bad news? i’m not quite sure. kelly wasn’t really doing anything special around the halls of west bev. but seeing her face still made me feel save and happy inside. like i was seeing an old friend. and besides – i was kind of looking forward to her hooking up with harry, and getting into a total bitch fight with debbie. weren’t you?

so what do you guys think? which one of these casting notices makes you squeal inside?

meet scott brown: the new massachusetts senator

20th January 2010

6a00d8341ca4b653ef012876f077e3970c-450wi

yup. that’s him. scott brown. see, he posed for cosmo back in ‘82, when he won their “america’s sexiest man” contest. of course, now he’s a total republican jackass. but hey – he’s the new senator and he was elected while already having the sex scandal. at least that’s taken care of!

but that’s not the only thing about scott brown that’s noteworthy. his daughter, ayla, was a season five american idol contestant. ayla never made it to the top 10, but she did get a record deal, post-idol, and made the local talk-show, state-fair, sporting-event circuit. i can embed a bunch of those performances to show you where she is now – but wouldn’t it be more fun to show you the train wreck she was on idol? totally! so here she is – ayla “the singing giant” brown. enjoy!

i can’t wait to see her sing at her dad’s inauguration or whatever the hell he’ll go through.

congratulations, brown family! oh, and sorry massachusetts.

the 67th annual golden globe award winners

19th January 2010

sunday’s 67th annual golden globe awards were pretty damn entertaining to watch. host ricky gervais provided the perfect amount of snark. luckly, nymag.com’s vulture has his best moments all cut into one conveniently embeddable video:

the fashion was on key, with the right amount of stand out dresses mixed with the right amount of “what the hell was she thinking?” moments (yes julianne moore, i’m looking at you). best of all, the winners provided some great surprises (sandy bullock!), some long overdue wins (kevin bacon, drew barrymoore), and some emotionally touching speeches (mo’nique, meryl streep, michael c. hall, the cast of glee, etc). admittedly, i teared up approximately 7 times during the show. take a look at great recaps here, and here. or just check in on list of winners below to see if you can guess which wins made me go for my box of tissues.

saturday night live in five [volume 20]

19th January 2010

if i learned one thing from this weekend, it was that sigourney weaver is fearless. seriously, the woman is in her ’60s. she’s made a career for herself in dramatic films and action films. and yet when hosting saturday night live this weekend, she did anything and everything to get a laugh. and guess what? it worked. weaver was pretty damn good, making me think – maybe heatbreakers wasn’t a fluke? and maybe i shouldn’t be too embarrassed about owning it on dvd?

regardless, there were a lot of great clips from this weekend’s snl. but no matter how good weaver was, the night still has to go to weekend update. with three great laugh out loud moments, they’re dominating saturday night live in five this week. so i might as well take it up a notch and group them all together. that’s right folks – three clips counting as one! life’s great when you can make your own rules.

so check out these clips and then after the jump the other four that make up this week’s best picks.

continue on past the jump for more!

god damn you, jay leno

15th January 2010

500x_tumblr_kw5mk5cn5e1qziqf6o1_500

by now, you’re all aware of the jay leno/conan o’brien drama that’s been going on. if not, here’s the quick long recap. in 2004, jay leno signed a deal to end his contract hosting the tonight show in 2009. but then leno started regretting his decision. and nbc started regretting their decision. after all, leno had been on top, ratings wise, for 16 out of the 17 years he hosted the tonight show. so nbc cancelled their entire 10pm drama lineup and gave jay leno a new show, surprisingly titled the jay leno show. that completely bombed. meanwhile, the conan tonight show did okay. 7 months in, letterman’s late show was still beating him in the ratings, but conan stayed strong. but rather than let conan build an audience, nbc decided to change things up. after the olympics, nbc wanted to move leno’s show to 11:35, move conan’s tonight show to 12:05, and push back jimmy fallon’s late night to 1:05am and carson daly’s last call to god knows when. however, conan o’brien (my hero) decided that wasn’t right. so he issued a letter and basically told everyone, hey, i’m not going to do the tonight show if it’s not airing at 11:35. and now? well, besides totally ripping each other on each of their shows, everyone is just left to speculate what’ll happen. rumor has it conan is on his way to fox [which would be a terrible idea, ps]. there’s a lot of talk of nbc trying to buy conan out of his contract so that they can reinstate jay as host of the tonight show [also a terrible idea]. no matter what, there’s one thing we do know for sure: jay leno is a fucking dick.

seriously, by now, you have to be wondering what the hell is going through jay leno’s thick chin. doesn’t he realize that the entire country is behind conan? he hosted the tonight show for 17 years for christ’s sake. isn’t it time to let someone else take control? it’s not like conan has been doing a bad job. in fact, his writers have been offering some of the smartest, tightest comedy late night is seen in years. i believe if nbc gave him time, he would have grown a loyal audience. there was no way he was going to beat letterman right out of the gate. letterman had an established audience – conan needs time to build that. but nbc didn’t seem interested in giving conan a chance. and rather than doing the right thing, it appears that leno is just sitting back and watching it all happen – completely screwing over the guy he called friend for all those years.

it’s a big fuck up, and it just makes me completely hate jay leno more than i can even put into words. if he does take over the tonight show, i hope he runs it into the ground, and nbc regrets losing it all. until then, i’m rooting for conan. somewhere, down deep, i hope he gets to keep the tonight show. but with bits like this:

and posts on craigslist like this:

conan-craigslist

i’m not quire sure he’s helping his situation…

what do you think? i’m assuming everyone’s on team coco, right?
